  • Hi, how do I teach my 7-month old lab puppy to go up and down the stairs? We’ve just moved to a new home and he’s won’t take the stairs. We have to carry him up and down and he’s getting heavy. Thanks.

Dog Coach Francis

  • Your issue can be easily solved by using treats and lots of encouragement. ask the dog to come down one step at a time. you can start at the lowest step and eventually go higher. Make it easy for your dog. Make sure the stair is also not to steep or slippery for your dog. with practice your dog will be more confident to go down your stairs. Good luck!

Ask q lng po kng pano q mahahandle ung behavior ng pug q. Kc po sobrang makulit pg i’ll take her for a walk lagi nyang hnhabol ung paa q so i have to carry her nlng. tpos pg bath timem mkulit din xa..ganon po ba talaga behavior ng pug? tinuturuan q po xa ng mga tricks kya lng nhhirapan po aq kc..

Your puppy’s behavior is normal. Apparently you still have not taught your puppy the desired behavior you want. When you said your Pug chases your feet, carrying your pug only rewards the bad behavior. I suggest clicker training or maybe teaching loose leash walk using positive force free reinforcement(madami sa internet). Please avoid advice that uses dominance theory or the cesar millan type of correction. If you taught your puppy tricks?how’d you do it? When taking a bath..has the dog been exercised before the bath? Have you taught your puppy to be calm? Clicker training or reward based training is the better way to train these behaviors. Since you have multiple issues. It would be best to see me in person or maybe attend my free seminar

○    I understand the frustration of having a excessive barker. The barking issue might be a result of the dog being stressed and has developed an attention getting behavior from you. You are rewarding the barking behavior everytime you go check the dog when she barks. Solution ignore the behavior and reward calm behavior by providing treats when they are calm. Avoid using corrections as this adds stress to the dog and it does not teach the dog to stop barking at this point. Immediately reward the dog when she stops barking. Try removing the mother away from the puppies so as not to over stress the mom. Give breaks or intervals. When its time to feed the puppies then bring the mother back..di naman kailangan lagi nandun ang nanay..bigyan mo ng pahinga..I don’t recommend na ilabas mo yun nanay ng house pero atleast give some space..always monitor the puppies and the mother when they are together..if the mother is overly stressed baka balingan nya ang puppies. Meron kasi mga nanay na hindi marunong maging nanay. Goodluck and let me know if it works

○    wow ang galing nung attention getting behavior parang ganun nga sir francis yung ginagawa nya, hindi pa man nakikita yung aso eh yan nga ang issue nya sige po gagawin ko po yan. Thanks po!

Hello! My brother has a black lab (Sachi) approx 1 y/o who is very playful and keeps making “damba”. We want to get her to be calm and assertive and know basic commands. Kind of like the temperament of the black labs in airports or in hotels. How do we do that?

I also have a 4 y/o lhasa, Maximus, who is well socialized to dogs and people but for some reason he is on the warpath with Sachi. I think it’s because he gets annoyed with Sachi’s all over the place energy. Or maybe he’s jealous because he lets out a high pitched bark whenever Sachi is near. (with other dogs, it’s a diff kind of bark).

Would you have any suggestions? What training program do you offer for this? Would appreciate more info, thanks! Ideally, we want Sachi to be calm like the black lab in your cover photo. Right now, we can’t let her run free (she is just tied up) because she eats everything, chews everything and … well, you get the picture.

Thanks!

hi there…based on your story what you need is a behavior adjustment training for both of your dogs. I’m sure you already made a few research for your issue..what have you tried and did those work? dog behavior is far more complicated than most people think and there are is no one size fits all solution. However using positive reinforcement and associations will help the dogs understand what is asked from them. if you are insterested we can schedule an assessment or consultation in your place to get the whole picture of the situation. A high energy dog needs an outlet for the excess energy. Basic obedience training is also a way to help take control of a dog.

  • hi francis. can i ask you a question? how can you start training your dog for off leash walking? thanks

Dog Coach Francis

Off leash walks is a result of good communication and trust with the dog and owner. Starting young is important , enrolling in an off leash puppy class is also an  excellent way to get things started. Building trust takes time and will need a lot of work with the owner and dog. When starting the training, you have to find the motivation of your dog, whether that’s food rewards or play reward. Always remember from the point of view of the dog ,why do i have to follow you if there is an awesome smell of a dog from that tree? You have to make sure that you are more rewarding for the dog to follow you and obey your cues. Good luck.

sir, my labrador just got stud. she will be delivering her puppies after 65 days am I right? I gave her dupaston on the 2nd day she was stud I mixed it to her food its a tablet. am I doing the right thing?

Dog Coach Francis

Thank you for asking a question and visiting my page.I am however is not a Vet and in no position to give any professional medical advise. Anyway I am concerned to why you are providing “dupaston” to a labrador. Was this advised by your Vet? If you are expecting your lab to be pregnant, it would be best to stop unprescribed medications,to minimize risk with your dame and her puppies. Please seek your vet for more info.

JerickoBrentPonceAngeles

Yung taong pina-studan ko ng labrador ko suggested me to give dupasthon to my labrador, it was highly recomended po after stud daw po talaga.. i think i believe in them because marami na syang mga breed ng dogs and i am just starting pa lng,,

Dog Coach Francis

I understand. I suggest to check with your Vet still. 😉

Hi sir my 7 old months shih tzu , dalawang klase n ng vitamins ang binigay q sa kanya pero ayaw Nya parin !!! Kaya medyo payat tuloy xa kc ayaw Nya ng vitamins !!! Anu bang gagawin q sa kanya!!

FrancisCleofasDogBehavioristandTrainer

Have you consulted you vet regarding your dog’s issue? Anyway here are a few points.

1.Check for your dog’s ideal weight.

2.Check for the dog’s kibbles, maybe switching into a more suitable dog food will help your dog to have the ideal weight.

3.Vitamins are there to help boost the dog’s appetite and general health, when choosing a vitamin always check the labels and dosages.

4. Whatever vitamin you decide for your pet,you have to make it a positive experience to your dog by giving a reward after taking vitamins.

5. You can choose to mix the vitamin in your dog’s kibble or water.

6. You can choose to enroll into my basic puppy obedience training to get you started in building a great bond with your dog.

Dog Coach Francis

Hi,Thanks for asking your question .It could be an skin infection or scabies kung nangagati ang dog mo. You may also try switching your dogs shampoo with a MEDICATED shampoo you can buy from your local pet store. I am not a veterinarian but a dog behaviorist so I recommend consulting with your vet so they may run test. Let me know what you find out.I hope everything works out. 🙂

Hey Dog Coach Francis. My German Shepherd is mostly obedient, but he knocks over my kids when he plays. How do I train him to be more careful? He responds well to commands and treats.

Francis Cleofas – Dog Behaviorist and Trainer

Hi Chad, First: you have to teach your kids “how to be a tree” (Video Link below). If you think the dog is getting too excited,Let your kids play a game of being a tree. Normally dogs will calm down and will loose interest. Second: For the dog training , Playing the “How to be a tree” game will condition the dog to play nice— if not the game stops. Third:Asking the dog to “SIT” will also divert the issue into a more desirable behavior. Use Reward/Lure training. When using treats as reward or lures, you should phase out the treats as early as possible but not turning cold turkey. If the dog learns the SIT even without treats then you’ll be more confident with the dog.Don’t forget to praise the dog for being nice or for sitting or staying calm.http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=kG3AR1VHPMg&feature=endscreen
